Why we are striking

Camden library workers are on indefinite strike. Staff are striking about the new staffing structure that management are seeking to introduce. This review has not been initiated by the need for cuts, but the proposed structure will mean:

• Increase in management posts - up 30%
• Decrease of 26 front- Line library assistant posts - down 38%
• Redundancies for some staff
• Downgrading for others
• Part-timers possibly forced to change hours which may result in loss of pay
• Long-standing staff forced to gain qualifications
• Less time for vital backroom work.

The Result Will Be:

• A demoralised and undervalued workforce.
• Poorer service to the public e.g. longer waiting times for new books, CDs, video etc., fewer staff able to deal with enquiries

We are fighting both to retain our jobs and working conditions and to maintain services.

Library staff and users have endured a number of reviews, the last just four years ago. The current staffing review is taking place in complete isolation from the ongoing review of library services. Management gave KPMG (City accountants) £34,000 to carry out this review of service delivery and plans to spend another £58,600 on consultation. Every one of KPMGs initial proposals will result in library closures.
